As the number of factory robots increases, relying solely on ad-hoc handling when faults occur can easily lead to shortages of personnel, spare parts, and technical documentation. An effective repair and maintenance system requires integrating equipment criticality, fault response, preventive inspections, and verification standards.

  1. Establish Equipment Classification

Classify equipment into critical, important, and general levels based on the robot's impact on the production line, availability of backup stations, spare parts lead time, and safety risks. Critical equipment should be equipped with more comprehensive spare parts and contingency plans.

  1. Maintain Basic Documentation

Organize robot model numbers, serial numbers, controller versions, software versions, program backups, zero-point data, electrical diagrams, and historical repair records. Lack of reliable backups significantly increases recovery time after a controller failure.

  1. Develop Inspection Items

Perform daily checks for alarms, sounds, temperature, and oil leaks; conduct regular inspections of control cabinet cooling, cables, connectors, bases, fixtures, and safety circuits; check lubrication, brakes, and mechanical clearances based on operating hours.

When a stoppage occurs, first record the alarm, time, posture, program position, and peripheral equipment status before performing a reset or power cycle. Define the contact sequence for on-site personnel, maintenance engineers, and spare parts suppliers.

  1. Standardize Repair Verification

Any repair should be followed by verification through low-speed, automatic, load-bearing, repetitive operation, and safety interlock tests. After replacing critical components, also check parameters, zero points, tool coordinates, and workpiece coordinates.

The goal of factory robot repair and maintenance is not to increase the frequency of inspections, but to make faults traceable, spare parts accessible, and repairs verifiable, thereby reducing the actual downtime that impacts production.
