How to Implement Remote Diagnosis for Industrial Robots? Data Preparation and Safety Boundaries for Multi-Brand Equipment Repair

Remote diagnosis can help quickly triage faults for industrial robots such as ABB, FANUC, KUKA, and YASKAWA, but it cannot replace on-site safety verification and hardware inspection. This article explains the required materials, collaboration processes, and risk boundaries for remote repair.

With the increase of multi-brand robot production lines, remote diagnosis is becoming an important part of industrial robot repair. Engineers can preliminarily determine the fault scope based on alarm records, operating status, and on-site measurement results, reducing unnecessary disassembly and incorrect spare part replacement. However, remote connection does not equal remote repair; when involving safety circuits, power supply, mechanical brakes, and robot body disassembly/assembly, operations must still be performed by qualified on-site personnel.

01. What materials should be prepared before remote diagnosis
On-site personnel should record the robot brand, controller type, fault occurrence time, current operating mode, and the original alarm text; do not only send the alarm code. Simultaneously provide operational changes before and after the fault, such as changing end-effectors, collisions, abnormal power loss, or program adjustments. It is recommended to export alarm history, system logs, and necessary backup files, and photograph the control cabinet indicator status, connectors, and record videos of the faulty motion. Backup materials should be transmitted through controlled channels, avoiding direct modification of original files.

02. Triage according to fault hierarchy
Diagnosis for ABB, FANUC, KUKA, YASKAWA, and general industrial robots can first distinguish between power supply, safety, communication, servo, and mechanical issues. When the robot cannot power on, first verify input power, circuit protection, and internal cabinet power status; when it cannot enter automatic operation, check emergency stop, safety gates, and external interlocks; for servo alarms, combine the affected axis, posture, load, and cable status for judgment. If abnormalities only appear at specific positions, focus on checking trailing cables, connectors, and mechanical interference; do not judge drive damage solely based on the alarm name.

03. On-site inspection requirements under remote guidance
Before measuring voltage, insulation, or brake status, measures for stopping, powering off, verifying power absence, and preventing accidental movement must be executed. Do not short safety signals, force outputs, or repeatedly reset without confirmation. When involving risks of robot axis dropping, reliable support for the manipulator and load must be applied first. On-site personnel should send back measurement locations, instrument ranges, and actual results, avoiding vague descriptions like "voltage normal" or "line is fine."

04. Forming a traceable maintenance closed loop
Effective robot maintenance not only restores operation but should also record the fault cause, replaced components, parameter changes, and verification results. After repair, perform low-speed no-load, process linkage, safety function, and continuous operation checks, and confirm that zero points, tool coordinates, and programs have not been inadvertently altered. For recurring alarms, compare historical work orders to investigate common factors such as heat dissipation, power supply, cable bending, or mechanical load. Remote diagnosis is suitable for narrowing down the scope and formulating a plan; final acceptance should still be based on on-site test results.
