How to Diagnose Abnormal Noises in ABB Robot Body? Inspection of Reducers, Bearings, Brakes, and Cables

When an ABB robot produces friction sounds, knocking sounds, periodic humming, or startup impacts during operation, it is first necessary to confirm whether the sound originates from a specific axis, the mechanical transmission, or external piping/cabling. Continuing to run at high speed may exacerbate damage to the reducer, bearings, or brake components.

  1. Record the Conditions of the Abnormal Noise

Record the axis position, robot posture, direction of motion, speed, acceleration, load, and operating temperature when the noise occurs. Impacts that only appear during direction reversal, humming that only occurs in heavy-load postures, and friction sounds that repeat with each rotation correspond to different troubleshooting directions.

  1. Inspect the Mechanical Transmission

Run a single axis at low speed and observe vibration, temperature rise, and mechanical clearance. Check the reducer lubrication, oil leaks, metal particles, bearing condition, connection structure, and base fastening to avoid misdiagnosing external looseness as reducer damage.

  1. Inspect the Brake and Balancing Device

For impacts during startup or gravity axis slippage, check the brake release voltage, brake wear, and holding capacity. For models equipped with balancing cylinders or spring balancing devices, also confirm their connection and load-bearing state.

  1. Eliminate Cable and External Interference

Check if the body wiring harness, Dresspack, air hoses, and tooling are rubbing against the housing or being pulled. After repairs, repeat operation under no-load, rated load, and different postures, comparing sound, vibration, and temperature.

Abnormal noises in the ABB robot body should be investigated using repeatable conditions as clues. First, eliminate external interference, then use single-axis and load-bearing tests to diagnose transmission, bearing, and brake components.
